Cataract



Our human Eye is like a camera. For a good vision our lens should be clear so that light would go through it and occur at the retina part. When the lens becomes opaque or cloudy then, there is difficulty in the vision which results in blurred or dim picture image. When the lens seems to be opaque or cloudy, it is called cataract.


Types of Cataract

Cataract by Location

1.     Cortical Cataract: It is when there is cloudy opacity found in the outer part of the lens that is cortex.
2.     Nuclear Sclerotic Cataract: In this type of cataract there is a gradual yellow cloudiness and hardening of nucleus i.e. the central part of eye lens.  It is a gradual impairment disease.
3.     Posterior Subcapular Cataract: In this the opacity or cloudiness develops on the part of lens called capsular bag. It is common in diabetic patients.

Cataract by Origin

1.      Congenital Cataract: It is when the cataract is from birth.
2.     Secondary Cataract: It develops after an eye surgery for retina or glaucoma and also if a person is suffering from diabetes.
3.     Traumatic Cataract: Result of any direct injury to the human eye.
4.     Radiation Cataract: Occurs when eye get exposed to certain form of radiation.


Symptoms

·         Photophobia that is sensitivity to sunlight
·         Fuzzy, foggy, cloudy or filmy vision
·         Difficulty in vision at night or in dim light
·         Observing double vision by one eye
·         Problem in making difference between color shades
·         Problem in viewing shapes against a background
·         View rainbow halos around a light

Precaution and Prevention Measures

·         Use sunglasses when go outside under sun
·         Read in better lightning instead of dim light
·         Use better eye glasses and only after checking the lens number
·         It is better to eat green leafy vegetables
·         Control the blood sugar level
·         Avoid taking oral steroids for long time
